Pathfinder Ultimate Intrigue is a new product for the wonderful tabletop RPG developed by Paizo Inc. which wants to expand the possibilities of social or urban encounters and it came out on the 5th of May 2016.

This new addition focuses on other ways of making yourself known in the world of Golarion aside from the typical fame that comes from slaying monsters. When you are in large cities you have to use your wits and try to outsmart all the greedy merchants, court officials or crime lords and you do this by using words instead of the sword.

The vigilante is a new character class that was added with this supplement and it is a person living two lives. His or her true identity is hidden behind a secret persona and this is how they manage to fight their enemies. The concept of vigilante isn’t just that of a hero, they can also be villains working for their own personal gain without the fear of repercussions.

This class combines skills from the monks, rogues and spell casters but in the end it’s quite different from all of them. It might be a niche choice for some campaigns, but it brings some interesting new elements into the game.

You have the Avenger archetype which is some sort of Batman model, the Warlock with casting talents that include bombs along with spells and the Zealot which is inspired by the Inquisitor. They tested the class for a long time and hopefully the final version is something that can actually be integrated in a normal game.

The alchemists, bards, druids, hunters, inquisitors, investigators, mesmerists, rangers, rogues, slayers and spiritualists receive new archetypes and new feats are added as well. The magic items included will help you fight on the streets, confuse your opponents or give you disguises that cannot be unveiled. In the same tone the spells will provide ways of handling social encounters to find out what your opponents are hiding or help you better hide your own intentions.

An influence system was introduced to offer new goals and rewards while also providing new ways for the player characters to interact with various urban organizations. They mentioned the addition of rules for social combat and verbal duels where you use words to influence or insult your foes but how that will work remains to be seen. “A high-stakes game of shadows and secrets is yours to master –a if you have the wits!”
