SpellForce 3 Preview
SpellForce 3 continues the great series which combines role-playing with real time strategy and this time the action is set before the two previous games. Since it will take place 500 years before the convocation there will be no islands or portals in this one.
The great thing is that this game will be released sometime this year after it was first presented at GamesCom 2014. “SpellForce 3 goes back to the roots of the SpellForce saga. The story takes place before the acclaimed SpellForce: The Order of Dawn and the players becomes a part of a rich high fantasy world named Eo.”
SpellForce 3 was produced by Grimlore Games and Nordic Games as an isometric RTS in which you create a hero and develop his skillset. Alongside your hero you get armies and have to control a complex economy. Once you conquer a new area you will have to transport the raw materials to smelters or blacksmiths and then to the barracks to arm your men.
The real time strategy part comes from the race you chose (elves, orcs or humans) which comes with specific units (for humans they are swordsmen, bowmen, spearmen and cavalry as the generic ones and they get the paladin as their special unit). To these you add the titans and the overall design wants to focus more on tactical skirmishes and on unit placement.
The role-playing part you get a more customizable hero which levels up and improves while also having a specific background that you will uncover during the campaign. Some of the famous characters from the previous games will make a comeback and the story begins in Nortander where the various houses each have their own agenda.
The gameplay wants to improve the multiplayer experience with many new modes and you can also play the campaign as a two player co-op. They estimate that the campaign will take over 30 hours to complete. One of the changes from traditional RTS games is that instead of having a global economy, you have areas divided into sectors here and each sector works as an independent base.
The graphics look amazing for SpellForce 3 and they already announced the system requirements for the game (which you can check on their Steam page). As for the actual release date they only said that it will be sometime in 2016, “when it’s done and bug free”.
