Dontnod Entertainment is a video game developer from Paris which managed to amaze everyone with their project Life Is Strange and now they have something quite different planned with Vampyr, a game taking place during the London Spanish flu pandemic of 1918.

The story of Vampyr focuses on doctor Jonathan Reid, a recently transformed vampire who has to struggle between the life he had as a human and the new urges. The main character wants to learn more about how he became a vampire and through his quest there will be many choices which push him toward one path or another. As in Life is Strange, here you will have several options that will shape the way the story turns out.

This time, the game is much more combat oriented and you have several moves at your disposal to quickly dispatch your foes, but at the same time, the game can be completed without having to kill anyone.

As we said before, the game’s action takes place in London and there are several districts that you will have to keep under watch. Since Jonathan is a doctor he can heal the citizens of the city and craft new cures, so one of the game’s tracks is the score of each area, determining how sick the district is. Combat is varied, you can use the vampire abilities as well as weapons that you craft or find.

Stephane Beauverger, the writer of the story said that the game is more about a tragic figure than about a horror setting. The creators only wanted the gothic atmosphere but you won’t get jumpscares here. Instead, you get to develop the character and make choices that are always going to be difficult.

The way the vampires appear here is inspired from the gothic novels more than from contemporary sources like the Twilight saga or similar things, so you get many of the tropes we were used to. For example you cannot enter into someone’s home without being invited there and this limits the things you can do in the beginning.

As you develop your powers though, you can mesmerize persons to invite you inside or to take them to isolated places so you can feed on them. This is the great idea in Vampyr, you can increase your experience in levels at a much faster rate if you simply feed on humans, but the consequences for this will appear quite fast and thus you always have to put things in the balance.

Vampyr was designed using the Unreal Engine 4 and will come out for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 as well as Xbox One but the only thing we know about the date is that it will be sometime in 2017. Don’t forget to share this article if you are excited about the game and we will keep you up to date with any new information that might come out.
